Jackson Pollack was born in Cody, Wyoming January 28, 1912. It 'grew up in Arizona and California, and was exposed to Indian culture through his father. In 1929 he moved to New York and began painting under his mentor, Thomas Hart Benton at the Arts Student League. Benton exposed Pollack regionalists with working conditions and the introduction of Mexican mural painters such as David Alfaro Siqueiros, Clemente Orozco and Diego Rivera.

From 1938 to 1942, began working with PollackThe Federal Art Project. This was an arm of the visual art of the Great Depression New Deal WPA (Work Projects Administration), a federal program. He worked in a program sponsored by the government which gave unemployed artists to work painting the buildings and non-state hospitals.
